Milling boards from Jarrah beams. Worth it?
Hi,
I have a few jarrah beams of varying quality that I was thinking of milling into boards. Beams are all around 210x120 and I want to cut them into 200x45-50 boards. Is it worth doing or are the recut boards likely to be unstable and twist and warp?
Thanks!

Looking at the pile you've probably got nothing to lose by trying. I'd look at the end grain carefully - the 210 face might be flat sawn maybe with some 1/4 visible the edges - so it might want to cup a little but 45-50mm is pretty thick so a pass through a thicknesser should fix that. Depending on what you're planning to do with the 45-50 boards you might consider cutting them along the 120 face to get more 1/4 sawn timber for more stability (although seasoned 45-50mm jarrah should be pretty stable) then glue up to width. Good luck - should be beautiful timber under there.

Cheers Charlie. If it doesn’t move too much the plan is the front door. I spose mill some, leave it for a bit. If stable front door, if it shifts too much use it for something else!

If its a door you'll need to really minimise movement - stability is critical - so select as much of the 1/4 sawn timber as possible. There's a useful article in Fine Woodworking June 2012, issue #226 on building a lovely panelled front door. The door thickness in the article is 1 1/2 inches, about 38mm.
