    Question Milling some logs

    Hi everyone,

I hope I have the right forum here. I have a bunch of logs at my place, probably a few between 500-1000mm diameter, and 3-4m long, mostly Ironbark i think.
I was considering trying to mill a log to create a nice solid bench for a bar. These size logs seem too good to turn into firewood (which is where they are currently heading). I have no idea how to go about this. The trees were only cut down about a month or two ago, so will they have to be dried? can they be cut straight away? Im not sure about the suitability of the wood either, is this a good timber to use considering i have it available already? Where could i get this milled in victoria?
As you can see i dont have much of a clue at this stage. Any help would be greatly appeciated!

    Josh

Not really my patch Josh, but I think there are people with portable slabbing machines you could contract to do the work. Try a google search.

And no, it won't be dry yet, and yes, get it slabbed asap to minimise cracking. Allow a year per 25 mm of thickness to air dry.

Seal the ends and mill them quick before they end split too much. Shiver me timbers are selling iron bark for $6000/m3 sounds far too much to me but it is nice wood. Where are you located?

well theyre actually at my parents place in Bendigo, VIC. Thanks for the advice guys. I dont want to spend too much money though, all i need is 2 cuts straight down the middle. anyone willing to help out can have as much of it as they want for themselves of course ill have to wait til i go back there later this week to check what size they really are, my memory may have exagerated their size.

    cheers

For portable millers check the website of the Australian Woodworker .... I think it is Skills publishing. This is just a guess as I am too lazy to do the serch myself. If the link doesn't work try a google search for Skills publishing. They were trying to get an Australian wide list of portable millers for this very situation.
