Mulga
Hello All,
How do you tell the difference between Gidgee and Mulga. I have piece of desert hardwood from the Simpson Desert South it is from a dead standing tree which I thought was Gidgee but doing some reading now I'm not sure.
Chocolate brown heartwood and very wavy grain.

I thought a photo may help. Is this the piece you are talking about?
Mike you show us more photos.
I have a few HNT Gidgee planes and gidgee has this lovely smell. That I would describe as spiced earth tones with a hint wood and pepper. Not much helps but it has a unique smell. Like a good spicy and woody male cologne without those citrus notes.
The only thing I can say that it is a lighter brown then any of the gidgee I have seen.

TS,
Yes that it.
Disappointing day today, finished milling the piece for a plane resawed for the sole and there was a check all the way along the length. It was fine on each side after jointing and thicknessing although some checking right in the heart on one end.
As its small in dia. I had picked the widest section of heartwood as the sole face so had to use the other side. Anyway resawed sides cut the bed and its glued up now. It is really hard had a lot of trouble getting the lamination pieces flat and square with a plane, almost gave up to use a mill file.
So what was going to be a heavy and hard smoother will end up as a practice go for the 8mm blade.
Cheers Mike

I found that using a lapping plate with abrasive sandpaper worked a real treat after planing as flat as I could get it. I found this gave the the best mate for my MK2 prototype plane body to sole.
Sorry to hear about your troubles but at least it is hard stuff, as every man knows it is better to be hard then soft. Especially when it comes to your planes.

Hmmmm - dunno about 'lovely' or 'spiced earth' etc Thumbsucker but 'unique' is a good description . That smell comes from a chemical in Gidgee that just happens to be the same as that used to create 1080 poison - dog bait! Not actually a smell I like but I suppose it might work for some

So , you would not recommend it , health wise, for a Kitchen Butcher's Block or Cutting Board.

That looks nothing like the Gidgee that I'm familar with....the stuff I used to get around Bourke was dark gray/black in the heart with a whiter sap wood that was rarely thicker than your thumb. Mind you these were bigger trees though....
My guess is you've got some old Mulga...check out these pics http://www.loggerheads.com.au/species.htm and if you are still unsure then ask the bloke behind this mob.Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.
