Mystery Tree with weird seed pods
OK had to stop at this tree as the pods looked interesting for casting. More a large shrub than a tree. Looks like the pod has a single seed between two solid halves though. I grabbed a few to look at later

Any idea of what the tree is?Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Definitely one of the Hakea's - but I'm more interested in the timber than the pods - beautiful stuff if you can find some stems big enough to work with

I think i have seen this plant before at a friends place when i helped remove it as it had died then we used it as fire wood. Were the seedpods grey on the outside? and the bark black if memory serves me wright. The wood was fairly hard to cut through with a bowsaw that was sharp.
Cheers WC

Definitely a Hakea sp. Some Grevillea's have similar nuts with a single seed.
The difference is that the Hakea holds on to it's nuts for months after they open, whereas the Grevillea's nuts drop soon after opening.
The way to specify the species is to wait until they flower.

Yes grey on the outside, but the lumpy bit peels off easily.

Can't remember the bark, I should have got a close up photo
The old pods all seem to be on dead branches whereas the green ones weren't and didn't want to come off.
Not like these ones. These are like golf balls split in half.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
