    Default My mystery Xmas pressie

    Post2.jpgPost1.jpg
My sister gave me this fence post on the weekend, lord knows how long it had been in use?
The joker she got it from who is working up north in SA is replacing them with moden fencing and (hold on to your hats folks!) is burning them!!
I've asked for as many as she can get for me.
The distance between the top and bottom holes is exactly 24 inches. Not a very tall fence! (Is this usual in the outback?)
I cut just below the dirt line and was overjoyed to see the color and how solid it remains.
I was glad to see the worst crack don't extend in too far.
    It weighs in at 6Kg's!
As for which type of wood, my first impressions were of Gidgee. Your thoughts are welcomed!
    Happy Holidays to you all!

Very Typical of fencing for farms/stations.
Still plenty in use around the place especially out here.
Most of the time they are from local trees in the area, and are generally piled up and burnt once replaced.

Looks like you have some nice timber there.

    Cheers

Does look pretty dam nice. Fences round here are your boring treated opine jobbies. 24 inches would make very nice pepper mills. And finials and pen blanks around the holes even. And hand chased threaded lidded boxes. And knitting needles and crochet hocks.

Does it have a smell when you cut it? Looks to light for western myall but that has a rose smell.

Could make nice planes and turned tool handles and boxes to keep them in.
