Default nsw rosewood what to inlay??contrasting timbers.

hi im in the middle of my HSC atm and am building a hall table from nsw rosewood (dysoxylum fraseranum) i am intending to do some timber inlays into the top and two draw faces with a contrasting timber. i would prefer to use a darker timber but apart from this i would like some suggestions from others to help my decision.

How about Jarrah or Red Gum. If you get some with good figure in it, it would look spectacular.

I've been playing around with rosewood for a while and it just gets darker with time, Red Mahogany splines in Rosewood boxes looked good for a while but are now almost invisible, Hoop pine just gets better. I'd go black (?) or paler.

Huon or Silver ash. The NSW rosewood will be red when finished and will get darker in time.
    so go pale i think.

    Default dark

Some jarrah is very dark, Qld walnut can be dark with brown and green streaks; a nice timber may be black bean, which can be a dark brown with some yellow streaks sometimes; blackheart sassafras, but you would need the dark type; Tas blackwood can be dark or light, again you would need to choose; I like the idea of N silver ash, white against the red, Qld maple light brown/pink against the rosewood red colour....
Southern pink silky oak could be interesting if you get some pink boards.
The Sydney www show is around 19 June and you will have plenty of choice there.

my only concern of useing a lighter coloured timber is that it will contrast too much and take away the natural beauty of my rosewood, progressing more and more as the rosewood darkens.

i have purchased a board of qld walnut but found it still to blend somewhat with the rosewood. its a fine line i know.

silky oak brings another option of figured grain.
another student in my class is using wenge into red cedar. i like the silver and black lines running through the wenge as a feature, so im thinking to something similar tho without the black, a very dark brown or lighter red with similar silver lines....

    is there such a wood??

    cheers,

    Selby

I am a HSC ITWOOD teacher, and I would suggest either American walnut or the Silver ash.
Both would contrast well, and using such small amounts will not detract from the rosewood.
Good luck, not long to go now only 8 weeks.

Isn't NSW rosewood a (relatively) soft but very dark timber with a very busy grain pattern ?

The timber in photos looks nothing like any NSW rosewood I've been shown or have?????????

The scientific name you gave points to coastal rosewood a different timber than NSW rosewood????

I remember Selby's questions before about this rosewood. It is nsw rosewood but very light in colour. I have come across trees like this my self and have a few boards this colour.

With regard to the inlay why not use Fiddle back blackwood. I have attached a pic.

Also attached a pic of the usual colour of NSW rosewood logs.

    cheers

Thanks for the reply Stopper, but I'm still confused.

The darker logs are what I've seen mostly, but the litlle light coloured stuff I have seen has the same very distinct grain pattern, by lighter I mean almost white in some places, never seen (I'm no expert) any that looks like the light example you have shown or the original timber of this thread.

The NSW rosewood I have is some of the light stuff , very red or very dark, all with the same very distinct grain pattern and smell.

    Selly,
Why not go all the way and inset some veneer bandings? Have a look at
www.veneerinlayaustralia.com.au Timbacon in W.A. also has bandings. Good luck.

The good old stock standard Rosewood that most people are familiar with is like the old perfume ads in womens magazines --- scratch and sniff -- you will always pick it.

    Selby.
Why aren't you out drinking beer, experimenting with drugs and making a cheese board for your HSC project like a lot of students today?
I take my hat off to you for taking on such a project that you have obviously put a lot of hard work and thought into and i hope when it comes marking time, you blitz it. Well done.
I'm just up the road from you and have a reasonable selection of timber to choose from should you decide on light or dark. It would be a pleasure to help out.
