    Default NZ Timber Identification Help

    Hi there,

    I've been renovating my house over here in NZ and have been lucky enough to find some nice heart rimu along the way. However, I've come across a couple boards of a timber which I've not seen before. The timber is quite pale, with a slight yellow tinge and it's soft and has a nice uniform grain. In fact the grain is so uniform I thought it was some sort of MDF to start with. When I take a shaving with a plane, it's almost got a silky creamy sort feel to it as it separates from the board. I'm assuming it's an NZ native but any help from either side of the ditch would be appreciated.

    I’d take a shot at Sitka spruce, from Canada and USA, we use it to build aeroplanes. Nice stuff to work.

    I don't think its an exotic like pine or spruce from the shaving and other pics.

    NZ has a few native softwood species that match your description. That's where having good (ie reliable) reference wood samples come in handy, much more reliable than opinions of pics of bland woods. Have you eliminated kauri? Go to a wood supplier and ask them or but a few native softwoods. These are my suggestions.

    Odor is useful with softwoods, when they often don't have visual identifiable features

    It almost looks too plain for Kauri. I haven't worked with it a lot, but I seem to remember the growth rings being a bit more visible on the face

    Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not kauri. I've got a slab of that and this looks much paler and is much softer. I'm wondering if perhaps it is Kahikatea (white pine). It's the closest match on this page.
