Oil spilt on woodpile
Wow is me I think. Earlier today while putting up some shelves in the shed I knocked something over that fell onto an old plastic 4L bottle of citronella oil. The bottle cracked and all the oil was spilt overmy wood pile. There is a range of timber there jacaranda, mango, she oaketc. Most got covered tosome degree in oil. Eventually I want to turn these blanksand was wondering what effect this will haveon the finish. Will I only be able to use an oil finish or will it eventually dry out and wax , shellac etc can be used if desired?

Citronella Oil is a relatively volatile essential oil and it would expect most of it to evaporate over time.
You could help this process by cleaning most of it off and wiping the wood with a solvent such as Mineral Turps.

Sorry, George,
Big Shed is incorrect. Your timber is ruined beyond repair.
Pack it all up safely and send it to me and I will dispose of it in an environmentally safe way.
Cheers
Doug
PS: Just joking in case the significance of the smilies escapes someone.I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

The oil will barely penetrate the surface. You will probably turn most if not all of it off.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Citronella as Fred said is highly volatile one spark and it can ignite weeks after.
Tony is also right it will not soak in much unless its taken a while to mop up.
The safest and most sensible way to remove the oil is to soak the timber in water. Oil floats
