    Default Painting treated pine decking

    I have a treated pine deck that is 13 years old, and painted in a brown/red rust colour, the timber is still fine but needs a paint as there's a little wear and tear. We bought the house 2 years ago so I'm not sure when it was last painted. I need advice with the following;
    1. Should i give it a light sand prior to painting?
    2. What painting method should i use brush or can i use a roller?

    Appreciate any advice.

    Cheers

    Reviving an old thread, as I have the same question.

    TP deck is painted Woodland Grey and I'd like to change the colour.

    Thanks!

    I am replying to both the old post and yours as a general reply.

    Personally I would use a brush to paint a timber desk as this allows you to get into the space between the boards. If the underside is seen then you have to do that as well. Dealing with the runs is time consuming as you might need to scrape them off then continue to paint the underside.

    One of the things about decks is people walk on them. This will embed all manners of particles into the timber one of the first things you would do is a sweep.

    I have never painted a deck but I have helped a friend with a fence. I did not purchase the paint so cannot comment what it was and being so long ago I just cannot remember. I think we only scrapped it not fully sanding the fence and I am pretty sure we used an undercoat. It might be better to seek the advise of a paint store or one of the members who has experience with their painted deck could comment.

    I refurbished a pretty battered hardwood deck a few years back. First order of business was to hit it hard with a pressure cleaner - that got rid of ground in dirt and about 95% of the old oil based coating.
