Pecan/Hickory log
Hi to All,
I have a 30, maybe 40 year old pecan tree in South East QLD. Makes lots of nuts, and lots of leaves in winter.
Anyway, its now on the endangered species list on my property, as its way to close to the house, top heavy the wrong direction, and very tall.
The main trunk is a good log, about 450mm diameter and 5 metres long.
Does it have any value, in one form or another ?
Thank you,
regards,
Don

Like most nut and fruit trees, the timber will be worth saving, but care needs to be taken to avoid cracking up. Good for turning and furniture.
As far as value, if you are thinking of someone paying you to take it down, not a chance. If you are thinking of getting it taken down and then selling the timber green, probably again it is worth nothing. I you get it dropped, cut it up and stack it properly to dry and treat it for bugs, in a few years it may be worth something.
Hope this helps.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Thanks for the reply. I kind of guessed what you said would be the case. Now its confirmed.
Pecan tree will now get a major haircut, and I may as well chip some of those branches for smoking fish. I'll have enough hickory chips to last 2 lifetimes or 1000 very large fish.
Thanks again,
Don
