Could that indoor timber be bleached instead of stained?

Looks like I'm going to have to go with Spotted Gum. Or Mountain Gum which is new to me.
Unless someone suggests otherwise for a long bar table top to fit on top of balcony guide rail.
Both standard grade with features. Not clean for premium quality price.

Some of the inside looks like ordinary vic ash/tassie oak, outside merbau maybe. Hard to tell with my limited experience [emoji16]

The bleached look is throwing me off.

grrrrr. Looks like no more small quantities of Spotted Gum at 140mmx19mm x 5m @ $5.50 / LM any more.
My supplier is closing down. Gutted.

Barry, can I suggest you go to a supplier of hardwood flooring and ask for a few samples. Often you can get pieces about 150 mm long to take home.

Find a "I like that combination" type of match and order the wood you need for the bar top with confidence.

could always talk with the builders who are making the homes or look up the development on councils website and see what materials they are using. normally the finishes and internal materials are listed on the da.

I have some Qld Blackbutt that looks very similar in colour to the indoor stuff but I don't have any knots in mine...

Looks like Heavy Hopea.

its a current favorite with the wholesalers... they can buy it in by the container load cheap, price it just under domestic species, and make a killing off it because theres so much markup. So they push it to the architects who spec the houses up. (This is the real way the timber business works)

Was hoping to get away with just advise on this project but looks like they want me to have a go.
And include the client in on all aspects.

It's the daughters boyfriend of 3+ years.
I'm doing it for the price of the materials.
Just to keep me busy. And from going mental with idle hands.
And of course for the daughter.

So he's just renting and this is NOT his investment property.
He got along with the owner quite well.
And the owner is very happy to let him do this.

After an initial discussion and his description seemed easy enough.

I designed these options with various timber suggestions:

This morning he's adamant about staining the timber the same as the apartment balcony decking.
I've left it up to him to get the timber and stain info.
I'm more interested in building than staining.
I've also mentioned pretty much any timber turns silver grey over time unless kept up regularly.

Any thoughts?

He's just sent me this: Instruction – URbalkon.bar

I like the galvanized metal assembly parts underneath.
But don't like the idea of the metal parts against the hand rail.

He also mentioned he like the bar top deep enough to fit plates.

He's asked for a way to protect the powder coated hand rail.
Any thoughts?

I think you should talk to rwbuild. I am sure that there are BCA rules around hand rails which you won't want to be responsible for not following.

Kinda hard with such small pics...
The balustrade in the third indoor pic looks like Vic Ash, the flooring in the first pic I think is engineered feature grade American Oak flooring.
