Default Please help identify this timber on my chair

Not sure what timber it is on my very old chair but I think it could be Walnut with a Mahogany stain?

Might be worth taking more pics of the grain, on top of the rails and also on the sides of the rails to see the quarter sawn sides. Also the ends of the arm rests too.

what is the provenance of your chair? i.e. how long have you had it, where did it come from, etc.

the grain in the picture is unlike any of the Walnut or Mahogany I have here

Not to sound like a knob...but it would help a lot if the pictures were in focus...

That being said, I'm almost certain it's just Vic Ash with a dark stain. The gum vein is a dead giveaway.

Sorry about the pics. Was purchased in Melbourne by a relative and now passed on to me.

I'd go Vic Ash with a Mahogany stain.

anyone want to hazard an opinion on whether the wood is old growth or plantation grown?

I'm thinking the timber is rather coarse for old growth.

Could be either. Would very much depend on tree age at time of felling. Generally, for mass production furniture work, most of what is used these days is plantation grown. There is much variation in Vic Ash grain and colour , largely due to differing soils and rainfall in that particular stand.

I was thinking that the growth rings look more like those found in fast grown plantation wood, rather than the tighter rings found in old growth wood.

which in turn would mean that the OP's "very old chair" might not be that old at all.

Well, it certainly isn't antique. Old as in my aunt had it for about 15(?) years and gave them to me (another couple of years).
