Default Please help with timber identification

    Hi guys,

I've been planning to build a workbench for a while now and I have been given some hardwood from my Dad to use for the skirting. Now, just managed to pull a length out and start flattening it and the figure in it surprised me. I'm not very knowledgable in timber at the moment so I was wondering if you could help me identify this timber.

Firstly, the timber is very heavy and I've had to keep sharpening my plane blade quite a lot. I've done a little research and I'm suspecting it's grey ironbark but I'm not very confident in my identification so a little help would be much appreciated.

Here are the pics and thank you very much for your help...

Depends on the weight. If its very heavy and very hard it could be red box, try glueing a bit of wood to the side with Aquadere if it chips off easy its box. It looks like some form of Eucalyptus but which is tough and I dont think you will ever get a definative answer from a picture.

I've done some follow-up research after your reply and I think it might be grey box. The colour seems a more yellow than red box examples I can find. Thanks for the reply rrobor. Very much appreciated.

    Another candidate!

Here's the end grain pic. I've not cut the end yet so I'm not sure if this will help. If it doesn't just say the word and I'll give it a chop.

As Carl said, it's spotty. The end-grain gives it away - very distinctive.

Thanks guys for your help. I've had a trawl through the forum and found that a lot of people seem to hold spotty gum in high regard for their projects. Do you recon it's a waste using as the apron to my new workbench? Should I put it aside for another purpose or just use it? Keeping in mind I have 3 lenghts of 1900x180x40 and I may only use 2 lengths for the bench.

Yes Spotted Gum is nice wood; I used it as edges on my vegi patch so a work bench seems a much better use.
