plywood
hoping someone can help me. My husband brought home some 5mm plywood with a red tinge. I haven't seen ply like this before i'm use to the plain pine plywood. i wood like to know the type of timber if anyone can help because i would like to pyrograph on it and i'm a bit sceptical about burning on something without knowing what it is. I'm still new to all of this so your help is greatly appreciated.
Regards
Julia
Ps for some reason i can't upload the photo's i took of so until i can figure it out i hope someone can help based on just on the info

Hi
Bunnies sell some imported Asian timber pinkish "marine ply". Is that where he got it? Its difficult without a photo. Meranti is pinkish too. Maybe you could ask where he got it?

Thanks for your help. Luan ply seems to resemble what i have, thanks steamjunkprops. Hubby got it from his work - printing factory not sure what they use is for.
i still can't work out why this won't let me upload my photo. I click on the paper clip and it opens up the file upload manager and click on the green plus to add file. A drpo down menu shows up to choose files from computer. but nothing happens. why??? very fustrating . I even created an album but still have the same problem.
anyway, i will have to research about luan ply.

Good Morning Julia
Years ago, when I worked in the timber trade, we sold timber from the shorea spp with the following trade names:
- Light coloured - Lauan
- Dark coloured - Meranti
- Highly figured - Pacific Maple.
The lauan was significantly softer than the meranti, even though from the same species. The selection was done by our timber grader and largely based on market considerations. Maple was more expensive than meranti and lauan was the cheapest.
Your plywood is rotary pealed with virtually no grain pattern visible making it very difficult to identify species. If it was sourced from SE Asia then lauan.meranti is a good guess.
