    Sam,

Others will no doubt provide more specific info on how the ply is classified, but the letters refer to the grade of veneer on each face.

"A" is really good and I think completely clear, and fine sanded.

"D" isn't all that flash and could have knot holes etc and I think unsanded.

B and C fit between them.

thus A-A has A grade veneer on both faces, C-D has C on one face and D on the other.

This face veneer grading has no relation to the glues used or the specification of the inner layers, which are another subject altogether. For instance, although "external" grade structural ply may have the same glues as "marine" or "aircraft" (usually described by the relevant British or Australian Standard markings), the internal plies may not have the same quality and some voids can be found.

    Cheers,

    P

Have a look at this site.

    http://www.chpi.com/pages/grades.html

Not an Australian site but the essentials apply here.
Have a nice day - Cheers
