Poplar burl.
I have a good sized burl poplar on my radar. Just wondering if anyone here has experience milling poplar and if so, how is it to dry etc.
Thanks. Jason.

I have done a few largish chainsaw carvings with poplar.
It was super soft and dull in colour. I think they make paddle pop (ice cream) sticks out of it and maybe even matches.
Being burl it may have a bit more going for it.
Those ones look like they have been cut back from an early age as they are usually single trunked.

Been a while since I’ve handled it, memory is fuzzy, be close to 20yrs, anyway, think you’ll find that it’ll be more like birds eye and and it won’t be very deep as it usually is suckers that have been trimmed or fallen of naturally.
But in saying this, you might have scored and it might be really tight swirly grain under it. Think the bits I did get ended up in the fireCheers

Hi Jason,
I haven't milled or dried it but ... from the little I have bought and worked with I concur with what others have said.
Black poplar (Populus nigra) I have a bit of, is creamy white in colour, quire fibrous, with a medium texture and is light in weight (low density). I believe it dries quickly and mills easily but can twist and turn a bit.
I've a very large block of poplar burl which I can photograph and display here if interested. It has large birds-eyes scattered through the wood. I’m surprised it hasen't attracted interest when I showed turners.

I have seen pictures of the burl which looks very nice and I understand it is more poplar with woodworkers overseas. I think that they also call it Mappa? Anyways, I suppose I will soon see how it behaves when I mill it up. Wondering if it might be prone to checking or staining.

Black Poplar Burl can be prone to internal checking in larger sections like the large burl slab I show below.
Its rough sawn which shows its wooly / fibrous nature. Bark inclusions and some fungal stain may also be what you can expect.
Cheers, Euge
