Can this price be right
Hi Good Peoples,
I have just received a quote that I thought was staggering but as I don't know if its reasonable or not, thought I would ask you guys.
It was for a 19mm thick veneer plywood. Size is 2400 x 1200 and its finished with (top quality) Jarrah. The price included cutting the whole thing into 4 bits of 1200 x 600.
Quoted price was $350. What do you guys think?
Cheers

Torb,
You won't get 4 pieces 1200x 600 out of a 1200x 2400 sheet - you have to allow for the saw kerf (about 3mm) in which case the best you can hope for is four pieces at 1200x 597.75. So it's my guess you've paid for two sheets plus cutting which sounds about right in my ( limited) experience

...ply still does come in 2440 X 1220...
Ric...ask the guy the exact measurements of the ply sheet. $350 still sounds excessive.

Years ago when I was getting veneered ply from Brims, depending on the veneer. the price per sheet was $300+.

Thanks for the replies.
Yep, I realise the kerf will reduce the size by about 3-4mm but that is not an issue. I just wanted the board cut into four bits so its easier to get into the car. The loss of a few mm will not compromise my job.
I specifically asked for one sheet. I have sent them an email asking if the price is correct as I could buy enough pure rough sawn Jarrah to make up that size for less. And to me, that does not make sense. Sure, I would have to do the work to finish it, but I would wind up with the real article instead of veneered ply.Cheers

A few weeks back I paid $260 for a 9mm sheet of ply veneered with 2 A faces of Euro Beech. That is Perth prices which is not very competitive. I think we only have one place that does the veneering of sheet goods.

Jarrah veneer is not cheap. For that size I would feel OK about it.

Decorative veneered plywood and also veneered particle board are pressed on oversized substrate. The reason for this is to allow for any shifting of the veneers prior or during pressing. The sheets are then trimmed to size or may be left in an oversize format if required. In the case of particle board, the raw substrate is sold as veneer grade to the trade.

If that price is correct then it seems crazy to buy it. I will be better off doing one of two things. Either buying rough sawn real Jarrah and dressing it myself. Alternatively, I had already decided to buy a bandsaw, so I could make it my first bandsaw project.

Cant say I am impressed with the supplier. I emailed them asking them to check the price stating (politely) that it was only one sheet with 3 cuts.
They did not bother to respond.
I rang another store in the group and was told that the 19mm sheet with Jarrah only comes in MDF, not ply, something the email response did not state. The store quoted me $184. That's a far cry from the $350 originally quoted.Cheers

You might give Amarind in Sydney a call. We regularly buy Jarrah veneered (good both sides) 17mm mdf for around $140, and the cutting should be free.
By the way, what is to stop you publishing the name of the company who have quoted $350 ?

Hi Len,
Thanks for the tip. I did call Amarind but they had no stock and it would take 7-10 business days to become available.
As far as naming the store, I will give you chapter and verse too.
The store was Mister Ply&Wood at Penshurst. Hopeless does not begin to describe them. The unanswered email was only the start!
As previously stated, I had established the price was incorrect by ringing another store in the group but unfortunately they did not have stock. On Friday late afternoon I rang the the Penshurst store (only because it was the closest to me) and was informed by the manager, Mohamad, (the bloke who had not responded to the second email) that they did have stock. He assured me that he would put aside a sheet for me and I would pick it up on Monday morning.
I got there at 9.30 (about a 100km drive) to pick it up. They looked for half an hour in the high rise pallet stacks but could not find any. Needless to say, I was not impressed.
Mohamad stated that he would get a sheet in and deliver it free, hopefully on Wednesday, providing his supplier had stock. He committed to get back to me as soon as he found out the stock position.
By 2pm when he had not called, I rang him again. He said he was waiting to hear back from his supplier re stock. He committed to call me back, probably in about an hour, but definitely by the end of the day.
Needless to say, the commitment has not been met.
Not impressed, to say the least. Mister Ply&Wood (at Penshurst) should be avoided as they clearly are incompetent, don't bother responding to customer enquiries, and don't keep their commitments.Cheers

That seems cheap!
I got a quote from them recently for a sheet of 19mm ply with Santos Palisander veneer both sides, $695
I'm going to take some valium before I break the sheet down, that might get rid of the jitters brought on by the thought of messing up a $700 sheet of ply

Does it have gold leaf fleck all the way through it?
I rang the head office today to inform them of the situation. Got put through to someone's voice mail and left a message. They didn't bother to call back. I can only conclude the "we don't give a stuff about customers" goes all the way through the organisation.
In summary, in my experience, they don't know what they are doing, don't give a fig about customers, and lie to customers whilst looking them in the face. Great recommendation! Not!!Cheers
