price of beech?
Is $4 per meter a good price for 2x4's of European Beech?
Would it actually be European Beech? or is that just a salesman story?

I would say its not bad. If you can post a pic of the grain then we would know what it is.

That seems very cheap for European Beech.........grain is very distinctive, so it shouldn't be hard to tell if it is the genuine article.

Could be Aussie Beech.
European beech in those dimensions is rare in Australia. Usually comes in to this country in sizes suitable for furniture, not construction.
Cant tell much from the photo.

Blackhole, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. The book price on European Beech from Austim in Perth is, for a 100 x 50 section, $19.25/LM. This is a reliable firm and has very good timber. Image would tell the story, and there are plenty of good sets of eyes here on the forum.

Michael, I was just about to ask questions of costs when I decided to read this thread and saw your post - is there an online pricing reference , and if there is, could you lead me to it, please?

Hi masoth. I have their May '08 price list ,and can send it to you via email if you send that to me in a PM.
But if you go to their site and press the "request further information" button, they will respond quickly and send you a pdf of their price list, assuming that they are still open before the holidays. It might even be more current than the one I have.
Cheers,
