    Cool Pricing on timber

I've been in the woodworkin game for a few years now have have always purchased my timber straight from the source or milled it myself. Its now got to the stage when I'm going to have to buy timber from a merchant like Lazeridies etc. I don't like being this far down the food chain so to speak and feel that I may be in for getting a bad deal if I'm not carfull. Just recently I've been ringing around trying to get a general idea on how much it costs to buy a m3 of hoop pine - not the rarest of timber by any means and so should be straight foward. It's been like getting blood from a stone and quite unplesent. On the upside it's driven me to have a go at the forum in an attempt to get unbiased advice.
Anyone have any advice / tips on where to get down to earth pricing on timber in general? pref Qld

    Cheers

    Irwing,

Can't help you in QLD but Boutique timbers at Telegraph Point (Near Port Macquarie) NSW have been excellent IMHO.

Speak to Mal on (02) 6585 8296 Tell him a pommy bloke with a black truck recommended him.

If the shipping is too much he should at least be able to give you a price for the timber which you can use as a guide.

Let me know how you go.

    Default Mal from Boutique Timbers

Mal carries around 400 cube of various timbers, goes to all the E Coast wood shows, but Brisbane was several months ago, so you missed out there.

He will give you prices on everything you need and delivers to Brisbane through a freight company.

    Regards

Try also Endeavour Timbers at Nundah
Speak to either Podge (the salesman) or Denis (The owner)
Podge is difficult to understand because he is Irish and has a B R O A D accent.

    Phone: 3266 2823 (office)
    or
    Mobile: 0419 760 298 (Denis)

    Irwing:
I have lived in Brisbane since 1993 and have purchased timber from John Gill (more for carpentry than for fine furniture), Moxon Timbers, and Lazarides (and also a couple of smaller places that I forget the names of at the moment). I have found a great difference in quality and prices between these agents. Incidentally, prior to 1993, I purchased timber from Trend Timbers and Glenlea Timbers in Sydney.

In my experience, Lazarides provides by far the best quality, best range, best service and best prices for higher end furniture grade timber. I know I sound biased but that is because I am a very happy customer. Troy (the son) and Gareth (the old man) are extremely helpful. But be careful about prices quoted -- usually Lazarides quote board by board prices which are substantially higher than their pack rates. Make sure to ask them for pack rates on the timber(s) you want and I think you will be surprised at the competitive rates.

As regarding being "that far down the food chain", I take comfort in knowing that Lazarides source their local timbers themselves, and air dry and kiln dry it themselves. They have large resawing capacities and do an excellent job of breaking down larger stock, allowing it to re-settle, and then putting it up for sale.

If/when you call Lazarides, ask for Troy, introduce yourself, and go from there. I wish you well in your search for the perfect timbers to work.

    Regards Luckyduck

I bought a small quantity of excellent quality hoop pine from Sandgate Timber Mill recently. From memory, it worked out about $2500 per cube for DAR 19 x 190, including GST. But no doubt you could get a better deal on a full cube.
