Promoting Aussie timbers
Of all the TV news desks in Australian why is there not one made out of Aussie timber?
Most of them look like an oversized plastic toy from Toys-R-Us and I'll bet they paid an arm and a leg for them as well.
I was just thinking it would be a way to promote our beautiful Aussie timbers and create work for local craftspeople.

Yes, money would change hands for a desk...as in you would pay them to feature it!
Preferably on a sponsorship basis, paid quarterly.
If (whatever TV station) still does the mid-week Commonwealth Bank economic round up in the middle of their news...that segment was/is a paid promotional slot by the Commonwealth Bank and not actually part of the news bulletin.

The 'in thing' at the moment is american white oak. Aussie timbers are all to red or too yellow.
Mind you, if someone could point me in the direction of a light/whitish aussie timber that is similar to white oak I would be very happy.

I Think you'll find that with the shift in exchange rates the American timbers will fall out of fashion again. For the last few years with the dollar floating around parity it has been very profitable for timber merchants to import from the states. With the dollar back below $0.80 US that profit margin can't be maintained so stocks will dry up.
interestingly enough while this has been going on there has been limited demand for domestic white species: ie the profit margin there wasn't as attractive so the retailers didn't push them.
if you want light/ white try silver ash as mentioned, or silver quandong. SQD is one of the most under-rated timbers in australia IMHO, and we turn it into single use skids For want of market demand. If you want a sample let me know and you can have it for the cost of postage.
