Default Protecting pine against the weather

    Hi guys

I have a plan to build a bentwood (or curvy, should I say) chaisse lounge (sp?) out of recycled pine floorboards and jarrah. The curved reclining section will be made out of pine and the framework out of jarrah. The problem is that the pine is really unsuitable for the harsh outdoors of Perth's climate (it will be for the pool area), and the only reason I am even considering it is that I have these seasoned floorboards taking up space in my workshop.

The pine would be cut into thin, flexible strips that I can bend into the shape I want.

Can the pine be treated and protected against the sun, or will it just twist itself into knots? I did build a pergola out of treated pine, but the sections here are much thicker. The whole lot was treated with Sikkens and has stood up very well.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek

    Default Paint it!

Plenty of traditional external joinery was built out of plain old pine, but the old blokes new that it wasn't worth a pinch of the proverbial unless it was painted.

Properly prime all joints before fixing, (unless they are glued of course) and coat it to within an inch of it's life with good quality water proof paint, preferably white or at least a light colour.

(Note that some modern "plastic" paints do not form a water proof membrane.)

On the other hand....if you are prepared to keep maintaining it, a waterproof clear will work just as well, but to make it a bit harder for yourself and to make it last even longer....coat it first with two coats of clear epoxy with a UV inhibitor. (Bote Cote or similar).

    Cheers,

    P
