    Default Protecting my timber stash from termites

    I have some timber stashed around the outside of my place. I am worried that termites might find their way and start attacking it. How can I protect it from termites, without spending hundreds of dollars? Is there a chemical I could spray on it? As some of the timber is uncovered, will the rain wash any protection away?

    Getting it off the ground would be a good start (and pretty cheap too i think)
    If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    off the ground is all you need to do. if its thickish timber you dont even have to cover it so long as you can clean it up easily... tarps are cheap ; you can even get a green one to match your grass.

    You can hire a Numbat.

    Cheers
    The Numbat is a small striped marsupial whose whole diet consists of termites.

    Send it to me for keeping - not safe keeping. I will do the right thing by the timber

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

    If you adopt the incredibly cheap method of getting the timber off the ground, try to use supports that termites cannot hide in (e.g. not timber!) make sure the supports remain visable and there is plenty of airflow around them because:
    • Termites do not like air movements and will therefore build galleries around the outside of the supports to protect themsevles;
    • You'll be able to see them!
    Alternatively, Bob's offer seems quite generous!

    You can also use H3 or higher treated pine to give the little beggars a tummy ache - just bury some 2x2 stakes in the garden - even use them to stake up some new plants for SWMBO. It is one of the 'recommended' methods of helping to protect houses.

    And as suggested above - keep the pile well clear of the ground, use 1x1 'stickers' to separate the layers & put a 'roof' on it.
