Purple Gidgee
Hey everyone, i was just wondering if anyone had any bits of purple gidgee or acacia peuce above pen blank sizes they might be prepared to sell?
I stumbled across a couple of really nice dark pieces at the Melbourne wood show on friday and would ideally like some with a similar colouring.
There's a couple of shots of my pieces...pretty, but annoyingly thin at only around 6mm thick

Just bumping this thread again.
If there's anyone out there that could spare any purple gidgee pieces 5-15cm wide and up to that thick by about a foot long i'd be very interested in talking prices.

Hmm what I know as Purple Gidgee is Acacia carneorum (formally Acacia carnei) or Purple-wood Wattle (it's even goes by the common name of Dead Finish in some circles) and the only purple timber that stays purple. Acacia Peuce is Waddywood or Waddy tree and does turn very dark purple to brown in time. Both are now rare and protected and it unlikely you will get some cheap. What you have looks like Waddywood to me.
I have some Purple Gidgee in log form, around 100mm dia x 500-600mm long, but again back home on the Gold Coast. I do not want to part with it, but could be convinced at the right (high) cost .
Next you will be asking for my Snakewood . Hopefully you are going to the BBQ next weekend (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/forum-bbq-tooradin-vic-193277) and we can talk moreNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Noted.
Purple/pink gidgee and waddywood continue to be rather confusing species to me.
I have another piece that i also believe/believed to be purple gidgee though in light of the waddywood attribution of those other pieces i'm not so sure now.
Either way, i'm very much after a piece similar in colour to this small block - which i'm hoping is actually purple gidgee

Unfortunately i may not be able to make it to the barbecue next weekend, though at this point i cant say for sure.
Again...send me a couple of pics of the logs and some dimensions and name your price oh noble keeper of treasures?

Ive turned a fair bit of Acacia crombiei known as pink gidee in QLD, puple gidgee in NSW, the brown heartwood oxidises to a deep purple with sunlight/time. all the finished pieces I have still display the deep purple colour...

I know the Acacia crombiei as Pink Gidgee, it is the one with the pink/red/purple ring between the sapwood and heartwood rather than purple all the way that Acacia carneorum exhibits.
Unfortunately the Gidgee names are just common names and so vary all over the place, likewise the Mulga names, that is yet another set of Acacias. There are over 1000 types of Acacia in Australia.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

I don't know about purple or pink... but I do know of two consistent suppliers of normal gidgee and figured ringed gidgee. They might have purple or pink. Best way to find out would be to call them I suppose.
One is Loggerheads. www.loggerheads.com.au/ The owner is Graham Naughton. Price is $50,000 per m^3 for all sizes from pen blanks to whatever the biggest piece of gidgee you can get is. The only way he will discount it is if you buy "a ton of it". At least that's what he said... And I think there's a good chance he was being literal. Graham has a kiln so it's always 15% or less.
The other is The Timber Joint. www.thetimberjoint.com/ . Prices are considerably higher, but they have a bit more sophisticated website and you would likely get to see what you're buying before buying it, whereas with loggerheads you tell him what you want, he cuts it, and you buy it. I haven't bought from them, but when i communicated with them last year they didn't have a kiln and were air-drying. This may well have changed.
Hope that helps,
Luke
