Woodbear, you gotta use a stirrup on 'em, it's just not funky chucking 'em straight into the concrete
If ya wanna know about 'em, my brother in law (a bloody great bloke) uses 'em quite a bit, just threw up 8-10 on a deck he built, so I could swing the roof off them over the weekend. I can put you in touch with him - He's in Brissy and does landscaping, decking, retaining walls, fencing kind of stuff.
PM me if ya wanna chat with him.Last edited by Sigidi; 23rd September 2008 at 11:09 AM. Reason: not telling :) (more info)

Whenever we've used laminated Kwila posts here at work we've always used a stirrup in the ground bolted to the post, like Sigidi said

When Kwila was first coming through in outdoor furniture, it had a reputation for bleeding tanin a lot when it gets wet. When I was involved in the outdoor furn game, we were instructed to tell clients to set the gear up on something that could handle the stains (grass etc) and soak daily for a week or so till the bleeding stopped.

Yeah, this is also true for many hardwoods we have, if not primed with oil based primer to seal them they will bleed too and leave that dark tanin stain on things like concrete etc.
It's not just restricted to kwila.I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Woodbear,
timber posts, kwila or other species, should not be concreted into the ground. The timber will rot. It's far better to mount them on stirrups or fishplates or even put them straight into the ground. (Stirrups or fish plates are preferrable though)

Traditionally I have always mounted the laminated kwila posts on stirrups but due to the circumstances of this particular project I was leaning towards placing the posts in concrete. The job is a kwila feature wall in a high wind area and I just don’t like the movement that can be associated with stirrups.
