Qld Blackwoods
I do a little milling and have recently gained access to about 20m^3 of Blackwood (A. melanoxylon) here on the sunshine coast. The best log is 60cm DBHOB, nice and cylindrical with no bark influting and 5m clear - I can wait to get into it!
I'd love to here from anyone in S.E Qld who knows of perhaps even better logs. I think I am becoming a Blackwood junky.

Hi Timboz. Your Blackwood log is probably as good as they get round these parts - the further north you go, the smaller they seem to get. I harvested a few off the old farm on the Atherton tableland, quite a few years ago, which were about 300mm diameter, not very tall, and near the end of their lives. One thing I have noticed is that the wood seems to get denser & harder as you go north. Not sure if that is just my limited experience or whether it's a general feature. Anyway, it can certainly be a magnificent wood, especially when you get that deeply lustrous fine fiddleback stuff.
Cheers,IW

Tim, I can help you with A. aulacocarpa, bit far away though.
Some of them go up to 1100mm at the base!
