Queensland; Timber wanted
G ’day, I’m an amateur Victorian Rocking Horse maker who has recently relocated to Noosa. Can anyone point me in the right direction forsuitable timber and suppler for carving the horse, the stand isn’t a problem. I have in the past used American Poplar (liriodendron tulipifera) but cannot sourceit locally, I have asked for Radiata Pine but the size seems not to be stockstandard. I prefer 70mm thick x 250 wide or larger, length not critical. If Ionly undertook painted horses I could laminate but for the natural finishedtypes a joint through the face may detract aesthetically.
I have asked Lazarides Timber Agencies for a price cut anddressed for a complete horse but the price seemed very high.
Any ideas
Cheers
John

You could also send Mapleman a PM as he has quite a bit of timber stored that may suit.

Hi John,
About 10 months ago a mate and myself bought nearly 2.8 cubic metres of good quality white cedar and silky oak, mainly slabs and posts. It was milled about 15 years ago and has been air dried and stored indoors all that time. From memory the slabs are up to 500mm wide, are 50-25mm thick and 1.8-4.0m in length. The posts are 100mm x 100mm. I think there was also a small quantity of Qld Wattle in the stack as well. We were going to use it for our own private stashes and a job my mate had on the go. We've taken a little bit for ourselves and talking to him a couple of days ago we decided to get rid of it (sell, that is) the rest. No idea of price at this stage and we plan to take some photo's next week. It's in storage at Maleny. I have an old Falcon ute so I could deliver some of it to Noosa if necessary. Let me know if you are interested.
