Thread: Real versus Fake Lignum Vitae

Ray - I'll be up on the Friday (18th) for Trend Open Day, might see you there?
Wondering if a lignum vitae insert would be good on a spokeshave instead of a brass plate on the sole. Hard, self-lubricating......and not too expensive for the tiny pieces required?

John look forward to seeing you
How big a bit do you need the native stuff looks and feels good will bring an off cut of what I have. The Real Macoy from Trend is nice stuff hope they still have some to drool over.
Reminds me a I was chatting to lovely young lady in Argentina just this morning she is due home December she is after ways of making money being a wood importer sounds good.

Ray - I only need a teeny weeny bit......something like 75mmm long by 10mm square would do it. Even 75 x 10 x 5mm at a stretch?
I do remember seeing a reasonable chunk of LV at Trend last time I was there. It was what I'd call a stick (nowhere near big enough to even make a plane sole), and it was $295.....
I'd better get there fairly early on Friday, or all the food will be gone.......

Your wish is granted
When cut it has a yellow oxidisation type look yet when cleaned up as you can see colours are real nice.
Cut this up this morning still quite wet.

Ray - very nice too !! I guess it wasn't too hard to cut up while fairly wet??
It'll be interesting to see what colour it goes when it dries a bit.
Are you planning on attacking this stuff with the lathe?

Hardest was verticle slice slow and steady with 3 tpi blade not a problem, the rest easy.
Won't take long to dry garage is like a summer house already.
Thats what the round was cut for and some smaller bits for drop spindles, finials, pen blanks etc. Not much wasted.
The fellow is giving me another bit or two so I can share with yourself and Pat.
