Red Box
I have an opportunity to buy some 3 metre x 150mm x 150mm Red Box sawn posts (air dried and ends sealed 10 years).
What is it like to work with. Is it stable enough for furniture? Is it hard on tool edges? What would be a reasonable price per metre?
Thanks in advance.

Red box is a very durable timber we used to cut a lot for fence posts. Not a pleasant timber to work though. As the tree is rarely straight, I wouldn't expect sawn material to remain straight as grain run out would be a problem. Like most dry hardwoods about $2k/m3.

Lovely tree but rusty is right in his summation. Just use it for fence posts.

I tried it once to make a box....never again. Brilliant firewood though!

Hi there,
I'm a saw miller and the red box in our area are generaly fantastic furnature timber if out of larger logs. I would think that if the posts have dried strait, the timber cut out of them would be stable. But once you cut them you will have to dry it again before use. It won't be dry in the middle !!
The price that was mentioned sounds about right.
