Thread: Red cedar stumps- are they worth milling

Milled a few Cedar stumps with good results....you may strike a dozy patch somewhere,but still worth it, as there will be some nice fiddleback in amongst it somewhere. Season it carefully though

this really shows my ignorance, but would one season before or after milling?

Hi Dubbo, I have cut up a couple of root ball/stumps, not of red cedar but raintree, the process would be the same tho and yep if the rootball u have is a reasonable sized bit of stuff then go for it, they can be hard work tho getting it out of the ground and depending on the soil type how much drama it is to clean it and then cut it up.... as far as seasoning cut it into 50 to 100mm (or whatever u want) thick slabs end grain seal and sticker it (in a shady spot (especially if very green and just air drying) cover (sheet of tin) and wait

This first one I dug out of the ground by spade, I soaked the soil for a few days at a time, more spade work until I could cut the roots then the nice bloke over the road said he would pull it out of the ground with his digger the wrinkles on the outside are a good indication of some nice fiddleback

and this one I got at the tip...dirt and rocks includedhalf a day just cleaning it I even had the concrete drill into it at one point
