Default Red Cedar tree in Kempsey N.S.W

Hello on the weekend we are having our red cedar tree cut down we have measured around the outside of the tree and it is about a 3meter circumference I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it would take to dry the tree has a lot of branches aswell as it hasn't had to fight for sunlight im sure it is very old as I have seen helicopter shots of my house many years ago and the tree was big then I have had the house for 10 years and always loved the tree but it is starting to get the plumbing ect was also wondering if anyone could tell me what a price it is selling for around the Kempsey area thank you in advance for any assistance in regards to my Questions

Cedar prices vary depending on quality. If the tree has been growing out in the open there is every chance it has been attacked by tip moth. This is not to say it is worthless, there would still be usable timber in a tree that size.
To sell as a log, you could expect between $500-$600 per m3.

The value of the log is nothing compared to the facility of having a red cedar next to the house. even the cost of re-doing a bit of sewerage pipe should be only a couple of hundred dollars compared to having shade in summer, sunlight in the winter, spectacular red tips in spring, birds all year around, ring-tails in the evening... We have one over our back deck and it is a joy all year round.

we have got permission from the council and the aboriginal land council as the tree is starting to cause damage to our house as the route system is quite large

That tree has the potential of producing some very nice flame grain. If possible, it would be nice to dig it out rather than hack it off at ground level as there would be quite a bit of good timber below ground.

the location of the tree makes it hard with some of the routes going to the house next door aswell as under our house but yeah the colour is really nice we might have to store it and let it dry because we havnt had any good offers so far

Dont worry about the roots, its the timber in the trunk below ground level you are after. The roots and the branches create wonderful grain pattern in the main trunk were they attach. As for drying, the log will require sawing into slabs or boards and then stickered out for drying. the importance of careful stickering can not be stressed enough. If not done properly, the whole lot can be ruined. That log needs a smart sawyer and careful handling during drying to live up to its full potential.
