Red gum bar
Have been asked for advice on filling large holes in a redgum slab (what to use } and what hard coating, sprayed , rubbed , roller to use. Will see it in a couple of days, not sure of the size but a fork lift was used to put it on a tandem trailer.
The surface still might want leveling , apparently to wide for a 900 mm drum sander. Advice wanted. John.

The place where I used to work can surface up to 3200x1250x100 and sand up to 1350 wide if you need, they're in Moorabbin. See here for filling voids: Novice with red gum slab, advice?

The bar at the Happy Valley pub (Ovens, nth est vic) was filled with epoxy plus assorted historical items ; old horse shoe nails , flecks of gold etc. I've heard of a bar in Wodonga with similar items implanted in epoxy including a redback spider (not sure how they stopped the spider dissolving in the frozen snot).

I use West Systems Epoxy Resin (105 resin & 205 hardener). As with all of these products when they go off they generate a lot of heat which, in turn, expands air trapped in the wood which creates bubbles. To a certain point these bubbles can be popped by the use of a blow torch, but only for a fraction of a second otherwise you'll cook the epoxy. When you're filling the gaps do not fill all the way to the top on the first go, leave a couple of mm, this will allow you to cover the bubbles, if there are any, on the second run. As for the finish, you could try Evolution Hardwax Oil. Its designed for flooring. I've never actually used it myself yet, but it sounds pretty good.

John, search YouTube " finishing timber slabs etc. there are many ways including coloured glass, clear epoxy with objects etc. some ideas are very entertaining, but I have my doubts if they'll work long term.
