Red mahogany
Hi. I saw some flooring made from red mahogany (or could have been southern mahogany). Nice stuff - though heavy. This is a type of eucalypt, apparently.
Does anyone know where I can buy some of this, as dar or perhaps roughsawn timber, rather then as flooring. I may be travelling to the south coast of NSW next week. I would like enough to make a bedroom suite.
cheers

Southern Mahogany is Eucalyptus botryoides they grow in eastern Victoria and into NSW where they gradually change into Euc. saligna (Sydney Blue Gum) These two species can’t be differentiated in some areas. So the wood is the same the main difference is at the extremes botryoides has rough bark nearly to the leaves and saligna has smooth white bark to the ground. Euc botryoides is possibly the most commonly planted Euc in Melbourne it is the most common tree I remove.
