    Default Redgum for jigs

I have a 35mm thick redgum slab that's too weird a shape to do anything with, so I was thinking of stepping up my tools with some hardwood jigs - a pair of winding sticks and a mitre fence. It's mostly an aesthetic choice - I don't have a lot of red timbers and I thought the contrast would look nice. Half of the slab is figured but the other half looks relatively straight - I'm going to use the straight part. No idea whether it's kiln dried or air dried but I've had it for a year and another woodworker flogged it off to me before that as an offcut. Is it going to be stable enough to stay true?

Redgum moves around worse than a cut snake. Unless it's got enough decades under it's belt to 'blacken up.' Then it can become more stable, but no guarantees.

It's one of my favourite timbers despite all it's foibles, but I won't recommend using it anywhere where potential movement matters; certainly not if it's in long, thin lengths.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Thanks, I thought as much.

Would merbau better suit? I don't like the look as much, but I'd rather keep the "expendable" timbers in my tools.

Cut and thickness a piece and leave it in your shed and periodically see how much it bends/bows over time etc - if it stays straight over 12 months then its worth a go.

Also, choose a piece that naturally has long, straight grain.

The redgum would make for nice tool handles, though.
