Redgum slabs
I had a 100+ yr old redgum removed from my backyard 12 months ago. Most of it has been slabbed and stacked in a garage since then. Is there a recommended drying time for this timber (50mm slabs 2m long, 1m wide)? How does one know whether it is too soon to start using it for furniture, benctops etc?
BTW, if anyone is interested in buying some of these slabs let me know as there is surplus to my needs. I am located in Canberra
Thanks

Bozo,
timber should be stacked 600 above the ground (but in a garage and on a concrete floor you could go as low as 100), supported every 600 or so, with stickers (slats) 12mm thick between each board. Stickers to be in line with gluts (bottom supports). Usually a year for every 25mm thickness for drying time.

Bozo
Who did the slabbing for you. I'm thinking about taking down a few trees and am interested in getting them slabbed.
Cheers

My first post on this forum!
@Natural edge, I notice you have a Lucas Mill and recommend $600 to $800 per cubic for slabs.

My second post on this forum and on the same thread!!!!
@bozzo I just noticed that like me you are from Canberra. Canberra is a very harsh climate for drying timber. Far too dry for good air-drying outcomes of difficult timbers like redgum. If you do decide to air dry your slabs keep them in a low wind area like your garage and move your racking sticks closer together (300mm). Also put double stickers at the ends and make sure you've also waxed the ends. This will help reduce rapid moisture loss from the ends and reduce end splitting.
Also, in Canberra, did you know that Thor's Hammer and Lucas Joinery have access to professionally dried Redgum slabs produced locally? They may be able to assist you with pricing etc.
