    Default Reliable sawmiller needed!

Hello forum members, hope you're all well.

I need a bit of help, if it's not too much to ask.

You see......I'm new to the Myall lakes area, and I'm having difficulty in sourcing timber.

I am mostly a greenwoodworker and have only handtools, and with these I build boats, carve bowls and spoons and make tools.

I need access to a sawmiller who will mill me exactly what he promises to mill me, and will do so in a reasonable time frame.

I've been in contact with two "sawmillers" since moving to this area, both have been unpleasant experiences.

Clear quartersawn boards of eucalypt, cedar and beech are usually my needs.
Usually no longer than 10 feet, usually no wider than 10 inches.

Also, quality small sawlogs of rainforest timber and eucalypt, for cleaving, hewing and carving, sometimes rip sawing by hand.
Usually 2 to 8 feet in length and no greater than 2 feet in diameter.

I'm more than happy to do business with the property owner, sawmiller, retiree etc, who understands the needs of woodworkers, derives pleasure from his work, and is enthusiastic about providing the customer with what they desire.

A couple of questions for those that know the local industry and timbers.....
How much would one pay, around the Great Lakes area, for grade 1 sawlogs of common Eucalypts, eg Flooded gum, Spotted Gum?
And how much for less common rainforest sawlogs of White Beech and Red Cedar?

So...is there a decent, honest, reputable miller out there with which I can do business?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks very much.

    Skarp.

I'd be more than happy to do some cutting for ya and if you thought I hadn't produced what I said I would - no charge.

Mind you where is hawks nest?

Failing that give Lucas a ring (1800 LUCAS1) they can put you onto Lucas owners in your area
I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

    Default sawmills

Mal has a couple of Lucas mills, but mainly uses his Swiss horizontal bandsaw.
He will be at Newcastle wood show this weekend so try him on 0416097827.
He can cut whatever you want.
    Regards

    Thanks for the replys guys...Brilliant!

I've been in contant with Malcom, and he seems like a very decent fellow, one of the old school, the sort fast vanishing from society.
Looking forward to placing an order with him, once I finalise my list of sections.

    I found another guy too....John Hodgson.....also a good chap.

Sigidi........ Hawks Nest is north of Newcastle and south of Forster, if that helps.
I'm terrified of freight charges from up your way, I'll investigate the matter next week.
Thanks very much for the offer to mill for me, I really do prefer to do business with the smaller guy, face to face, handshake kind of style.
Thanks for the number too, I have never thought, over all the years, to ring Lucas.
Beaut idea! I'll definately get in touch with the right people that way. The mobile mill owners and chainsaw millers are actually people, it's the big circular sawbench companies that treat you like a fly in their breakfast cereal.

Ahhhhh. Buggeration! The Newcastle Wood Show, I didn't even know about it, and Mal will be there. I think its too late, I won't be able to make it.
Is the show any good? Is it mainly tool sales or will there be timber for sale?

    Thanks again guys,
    Much appreciated.

Skarp, It only seems like us decent fellas are disappearing cause you live too close to newcastle (or in NSW for that matter)....lol nah there are still plenty of honest decent folk out there and we do what we do not to become millionaires at others expense but because we enjoy what we are doing. honestly I would rather have the ass missing in my pants doing what I enjoy than having to screw someone over so I could drive a beemer, and I can almost guarantee that anyone you speak to on here would be the same.

let me know what you need cause I have some nice timber I have milled, probably not in sizes large enough for ship building but other stuff, like blackwood for turning or furniture making and a bit of melaleuca with lots of birdseye and other stuff as well

You could also try Whitewood He mills a lot of paulownia for people. cant remember his contact but if you look in the forestry section I was talking in a forum there with him a couple of months ago and there haven't been a lot of posts since that one.

    Hey Travis,
You're right, the closer you get to a big city, the good guys start to thin out.
Thank god I'm not close to Melbourne or Sydney.
Thats just the sort of thing that has driven me to live in isolation on islands in the middle of the sea for the best part of my life.

I believe every word you wrote, mate.
If you didn't feel that way in your heart, then I'm certain you'd struggle to throw those words together as perfectly as you did.

I'll send you an email about the milling when I get a chance.

    Take it easy mate,

    Skarp.
