Got a few plans... ! They'll probably make some great dining tables, indoor or outdoor (preferably of the type that doesnt need to be moved all that often... they'll weigh a ton!). Also thinking of creating park benches out of the side pieces (ie the big fat curved bits). At any rate, I'll have a couple of years to think about it.

On the other hand, the Macrocarpa slabs I cut a couple of years ago should be coming online this summer... and they're even bigger and there are more of them (40, off the top of my head). I'd better get busy. (I have individual shots of each of those bits somewhere. Will post when I get the time/inclination)

PS - yes, very serious bits of wood! Notice the way we had to pretend to be egyptians rolling blocks of stone on logs to move them anywhere? Dragged them into position with a Gator once we were got them home to my place. The ground took a punishing!

hmmm... our school just planted Lemon Scented gums around the new carpark... don't think they considered the branch-dropping thing... How many years do I have to wait before they are big enough to pose a hazard and we can lop them too? Those slabs look great! Does the timber have any of the scent the leaves have?

I've got a couple of Lemon Scented Gums in the scout camp that are about 12 YO.
They have both dropped large limbs.
As they are both next to footpaths they are coming down very soon

I think you may owe the school staff room a nice coffee table!!!

Update: Eight Months On

The slabs have survived their first summer! (past tense perhaps not appropriate - it's going to be 39 for the rest of this week!). Anyway, they are still sitting where they were put in August with a tarpaulin for some meagre weather protection, and the prognosis seems to be fairly good. Most pieces are still dead flat, a few have bad splits but that's to be expected with this species. Most are showing some minor end-checking, but this only extends an inch or two into the length of the board. With twelve-foot pieces, I think I can live with it. It looks like 2/3 of the boards will end up usable, and the ones that have major splits can be cut to smaller sizes.

It was interesting to see the fate of the bark. After a month it had crazed and cracked, and by mid-summer it had all flaked off and was lying in small piles beside the stack. Instant wood-chips!
