Removing metal pins from recycled timber
Just wondering if anyone can advise on the best method of removing large old steel pins/stakes from old bridge timbers so that they can be milled?
Is there a special tool (probably hydraulic) that will extract these pins from the wood. If so what is it called and where can you hire or get them from?
The pins have a cross section of about about 1/2 an inch square stock and they have been in the timber which is approximately 4 to 5 inches thick for many decades I suspect.
Using a hammer and a drift is proving completely unsuccessful.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Regards Phil

Removing metal pins from recycled timber
Thanks for the link Vernon
Yes I was hopefull when first reading the forum on milling, however my problem is large steel pins stuck like concrete into the timbers not small copper nails as discussed. These steel stakes will destroy any milling machine as they are about 1/2" square in cross section and are embedded all the way through the timber beams. But I do appreciate your response
regards Phil
PS: May be some of the sawmiller operators will be able to help me if they have encountered embedded large metal pins in their travels??

Phil, did you read the whole thread? The last couple of posts show how they got the big steel spike out of the timbers, quite ingenious.

Thanks Burnsy (& Vernon)
I didnt manage to get past first page because I didnt realise there was a second page. Now that I know and now that I've read it, I see what you mean by ingenious. Thanks for setting me straight. The pnumatic star picket driver with a bit of improvisation looks like a great idea. I've just got to find out where I can hire or buy one now. I'll also try heating and cooling to see if that breaks the bond. Your help is very much appreciated.
Thanks again Phil
