timber for outdoor project
Greetings,
I am planning to construct a wooden screen structure around my vegetable patch. It must be esthetically pleasant, so some decorative elements/posts I would like to implement. I was thinking of using the old heritage verandah posts, but I am concerned about the timber they are made from. Does anyone have any suggestions what kind of timber I can use with an ornate character (preferably from demolition places)?
Thanks
Stain

Hi Stain and welcome, if your not too picky any old mixed hardwood will last quite a few years and either paint or oil for good measure. Tallowood is just one of the better ones if you want to spend more money.

Bullet proof
Hi all, my choice for outdoor stuff is always Cypress Pine, very nice and the white ants wont eat it!
Cheers...Jeff

Cypress vs Jarrah for Outdoor Furniture
Hi,
I am trying to decide which would be better for my exposed courtyard in the long run - Jarrah or Cypress outdoor tables/chairs??
I am told that the sanding from Cypress could cause respiratory problems?
Which would last longer and more resilient to the Perth weather?
Help!
Thanks
Eugene

Both Jarrah and cypress spp. (native or macrocarpa) will be fine for an outside table. They are both durable and tough timbers. To get the best from both.....they'll need to be protected using a good quality garden furniture or decking oil.
I've had a cypress outside table since 2001 and it has spent most of that time outside in the weather (certainly the last four years) and it has had much use (both as a table and a workbench)but little love.....and it is doing just fine. It is on the list of things to be refurbished.....one day.
Most timbers can catch you out, respiratorially speaking, so a decent dust mask is good practise....I use mine all the time.Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.
