African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii)?
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone would know where i would be able to purchase African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) In victoria?
I want to make a Shamisen, This lumber is a good substitute to Pterocarpus santalinus because it is a really difficult lumber to find.
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated ^^

This material is difficult to come by.
Trend Timbers, west of Sydney did have some, but quantity may be limited.
Therefore cost will be at a premium.

Yeah I sent them an email.
Damn, That is disappointing.
Would you have a suggestion on what i could use as a replacement?
I need a hardwood that is dense/heavy enough to sink.

NG Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) is close and may be cheaper

I believe I may have some Padauk (African & Andaman), probably as one or maybe two 1 or 1.5 " boards, enough for small projects only. Ones that I have had for a few years. Not sure of size or price. Wont be inexprensive.
You could try Trend Timbers in NSW they probably have some. They do on their exotic wood on-line catalogue
Suggest you PM me if you have trouble. I'm SE of Melb and at elast you could pick it up.

Oh okay, Thanks for the suggestions.
Yeah, I was just going off what I was reading.
I don't really know much about the density of wood.
Hence me saying I need something that can sink.

If you are after something that sinks might I suggest one of the Australian desert hardwood acacias like Inland Rosewood (Acacia rhodoxylon). How much are you after actually?

You could try and score an old fence post of Inland Rosewood from FNQ but transport may be a pain. Unfortunately I cut mine up a bit smaller than you require. Should be some specialist suppliers down your way that might have some or Cooktown Ironwood, Gidgee or Red Lancewood, might be just as expensive as Paduak but at least have the density you are after.
