    Default Salmon Gum Burls ??

    On my trip (https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...29#post1756629) I was passing a small town call Salmon Gums in WA. I assume the town got its name from the numerous what I thought were Salmon Gums around. Anyway, as I was passing I heard something say "hey Neil, can we have a lift?". Over my shoulder I noticed a big old tree trunk on the ground with a number of burls, so I decided to give them a lift . Did a U-turn and with a bit of help from my Stihl 211 they jumped in the car . A few hollows and cracks but who am I to complain

    The photos shows one of the nearby trees plus each side of the burls. Do they look like Salmon Gum to the experts here?

    Struth Neil, you've turned a bowl from one already? They look tasty for a casual find. Time to drive a litle slower and look for some of their mates.

    Don't you like it when the ants do half your work . I'm seriously overpacked now, I actually left another 4 on the trunk behind, even these are on the front seat . When I stop for a while, I'll repack them into the trailer, plus a lot of stuff in the car at the moment that were left out from the last demo.

    Bit hard to tell, but the burls look like Wandoo to me, either way, you are going to love turning them, they are as soft as butter

    I should know the trees with the copper like bark, but it escapes me

    Could well be Gimlet, after looking them up . I had assumed Salmon Gum due to town name and photos I had found. Certainly a very hard timber and these are as dry as a bone. I threw some oil (CRC) on them for the photos.

    When I get to Mandurah you can have a look Willy. There are a few members around your way I wanted to meet up with, HazzaB/BlackbuttWA and I now see you too Stuffy. Perhaps we can organise a get together.

    Good idea, but unfortunately Mandurah people are the Tasmanians of the West, poor table manners, don't extend their pinky when drinking their double soy latte with sustainably sourced sacharin and almond tree milk etc.

    Oh well, I supopose I can put up with Hazza for a couple of hours. If I can suggest, after working hours or weekend.

    I don't claim to be an expert with Goldfields timbers but, I reckon it looks like Gimlet also. I am reasonably familiar with Salmon Gum and I don't think it is one of those. Nice burls though. Derek

    Called in on Neale at Djarilmari Timbers yesterday and he said definitely not Salmon Gum burl. He believed they were Gimlet, although the Gimlet he has seen normally has sap veins, so not entirely sure.

    That tree in the pic is not a salmon gun. I would say gimlet.
