Secondary Wood for Cedar
I'm planning a few projects this year with australian red cedar.
Which timbers have people used (with success) as secondary timbers for internal drawer fronts, and panels?
Cheers

In the past Hoop Pine was used extensively.
I have a chest of drawers with this combination, only abt. 20 years old.

I'd second the use of Hoop Pine too.

Kauri
Kauri pine was extensively used as it has few knots, is light and easy to use..... and you know where to get it!

As the others have said, Hoop or something like it, seems to be a common secondary wood in old cedar furniture. However, there's nothing to stop you from using something harder for high-wear parts like drawer runners, if you are making a new piece.
I've repaired too many old drawers, which had badly furrowed runners, & eqaully worn drawer sides, so when I make something from new, I go for something a bit tougher. Am currently making a tallboy in Cedar to go with an older (60-70 yrs?) Cedar chest of drawers. I had just enough of a chunk of very clean, straight-grained Moutain Ash for the runners, and the drawer sides are going to be a bit of a mix - some Camphor, and some old Myrtle. That will also be in the spirit of the original which has a mix, though in its case a mix of Cedar & Hoop, which are beginning to show signs of wear & will need some remedial work in a few years or less.
Cheers,IW

Secondary timber for Oz cedar
Hi Boz,
Huon pine looks great with Oz cedar.

Thanks for the feed back everyone.
Initially I was thinking of silver ash (out of familiarity) but sounds like a pine hoop/huon/kauri will would work well.
Huon and cedar would be an interesting competition for aroma.
Hoop may work well.
I'll have a chat with Mal at the wood show... see what he thinks and has.
Happy to hear any other thoughts.
Here's some sketches of the first project planned. I think it's in another thread somewhere... and also Cedar Book Case #1: Design - thoughts/suggestions very welcome. - by Daniel @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking community

I've made a number of things (a couple of big boxes, and an electric guitar) with Red Cedar and Jacaranda. They're a quite nice combination. The final look is probably quite similar to cedar and hoop pine, but Jacaranda is a bit fancier!
Not a frequently used timber, but I happened to have quite a lot available
