Default Seeking advice on selling large amount of kauri pine

Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum and just looking for a bit of knowledge and advice from anyone.

My Dad has a significant amount of large pieces of Kauri pine sitting in his garage. We don't have sufficient ability to make quality furniture or the like out of it so are looking to sell it.

As a (very) rough guide the pieces are around 50mm x 120mm x 3+m. The pieces vary a little in each dimension, but that gives an idea. There's a reasonable number of pieces, totalling several cubic metres.

Any advice anyone has with regard to the best way/places to sell the timber, and what sort of prices we could expect in different places, would be very greatly appreciated.

Any small bit of info you think I should know is also very welcome, don't hesitate.

    Cheers, Andrew.

PS if required I can organise pictures, proper measurements etc.

You have come to the right place. The forum is a good place to sell timber. When you say Kauri are we talking QLD, NZ or Indonesian? Is the timber clear or knotty and have you any idea of moisture content? All these factors would determin the value.

Hi thanks for the reply. It's NZ Kauri with no knots, don't know the moisture content, but it has been in a dry area for 20 years.

Andrew, when you say 3+m, what do the lengths go up to? Also, has it been bulk stacked, or stickered out for drying? it sounds like you might have some good stuff there.

They are all pretty close to the same length, maybe towards 4m. They have all been in a neat stack, dry for 20 years.

And they were seasoned before they were stacked?

They were used in the construction of fermenters at a brewery, which were dismantled over 20 years ago and the timber was then taken and stacked with nothing further done to them.

I assume this means they were in contact with liquid. If this is the case, they would probably still be wet, as stacking without stripping out would prevent drying. What about staining, nail/bolt holes etc?
Some photos may be a good idea seeing the timber is used.

Some guys I shared a workshop with years ago used similar to this on restoration on a 100 year old steam yacht. Was excellent even smelt nice much better than the tannery smells coming from next door.It may not look pretty but plane up a bit and post some pics.

I think they would have come from the Ballarat brewery, which was closed down after CUB took over. I purchased 2 of the vats, they were appox 3 metre high with a diameter of 2.4. I made all the furniture , table , chairs , coffee table , nest of tables , wall units etc out of it , still in use in our home today. Its Queensland kauri, the planks were straight grained , no knots, it was air dried for about 3 years before I used it. regards John.

Thanks for that John, sounds about right, I'll confirm later.

I'm going to try to sort pictures to save us all the back and forth!

    Thanks again to all.
