Thread: Selecting support for a deck

Sizes etc depend on timber species being used.
Building Code of Australia specifies sizes, spacing and spans.
Best to contact someone in your timber zone (I'm in WA we use Jarrah or treated pine.), you might get better response in Home Renovations.

Looks like you are using Autocad or similar, how did you create and post your drawing? I want to do something similar.

If I have this right, if you want to post your plans or an image of the plan it is simple.
(and yes, I use AutoCAD).


1/ With AutoCAd and a graphs software open (Paint or what ever)
2/ I zoomed to the part of the plans that I want to show.
3/ press the "Paint Screen" button, just up and to the right of ENTER button on the
keyboard. This just makes a copy of the screen.
4/ Then I change to graphics software (Paint) and use the buttons Control+V to paste
the image in Paint, the screen should show up, then just trim the image to fit.
5/ Save it as a jpg or gif file.

Is there not an addon for AutoCAD for these type of standards?

Or maybe too expensive to invest in.

I took a TAFE course and was given the standards book from the Australian Timber Authority. It had quite a few huge tables depending on the grade of timber you are using and what task your using it on throughout your project.

The instructor was a bit casual in helping and a good friendly architect was a bit dissapointed I didn't follow his super safe recomendations. ( would have cost the earth and been a foot higher than I wanted. )

You'll need to chase up the CURRENT standards ( check the date on the book, and don't take anyones word for it ) as mine are from a few years ago.

Because of all the variations in my requirements I had to redesign the structure to accomodate the timber I changed to, each time something new came along.

Once I had finalized the design and the timber to use I checked it with the architect friend. The instructor said he would have been happy to assist in the final OK as well.

I logged a lot of info on this bulletin board at the time in the hopes to assist others as well.

Very easy to follow and will allow you to size up almost any member for your entire house. It lists the spans and sizes for F8 hardwood F17 hardwood Supa 17 F27 etc. There is even a cd .....

I just get the page come up with a 1 and 2 on it.

Don't you have to "participate in the poll" to be able to get the results of it????
