Default Silky Oak cut down yesterday - advice and any interested buyers?

I'm new to this forum and am not currently a wood worker (but we can all dream can't we!). Yesterday 26th Jan '06 we had a very old, very big silky oak (Grevillea robusta) cut down, sadly it was dying. This has left us with a lot of trunk that would be a crime to waste. The pieces are:

1 straight, unbranched length of 2.9m with diameter 80cm down to 65 cm.
1 length of 3.1m diameter 65cm down to 50cm that had branches off it.
1 slightly squiggly legth 2.1m with daimeter of 54cm.
several smaller diameter (30 to 40 cm) lengths all around 2m long.

After reading a previous post in this forum I have commenced sealing the cut ends just using acrylic paint - I'll put a couple of coats on.

Any other advice would be welcome.

Anyone interested in buying the logs can ring me on 0419442660 or send me an email if you are a member of the forum.

    Cheers
    John

Seal the ends of the log STRAIGHT AWAY!!!!!!

Use a latex based paint if you don't have end grain sealer & get the log up off the ground.
I usually just use a few 2" X 4" HARDWOOD pieces of timber to put the log on. It's quite easy to do by yourself with a crow bar.
You can then have it milled at your leasure. Have it cut into heavy 1" boards 26 - 30mm & have some 3" square as well.

You will make a LOT more money out of it if you have it milled yourself. If not the log is only worth a few hunderd dollars, if that.

seal the ends with a latex base paint or aquadhere. this stops the log splitting. You may find a spot miller to cut it on site. be sure you know what to do with it once you have it cut. In planks it needs to be stacked and stickered. Then wait 12 months for it to dry.

The key to selling it is finding someone who wants it.
heres a few commercial types to talk to.
