Default Silky Oak Log: What size to mill to

    G'day
Any advice is welcomed as i have never had the oppotunity to have a log milled to my specifications before
I have the opportunity to get my hands on a couple of silky oak logs. They are around 500-600 diameter and 3-4 metres in length, they have been dropped around 9 years ago and look to be very solid.
I have a mate who is working at a mill and he will be able to get the timber cut to size for me. The plan is to get both logs quarter saw.
My dilemma is what is the best size to have the boards cut to, thickness wise 25 mm. 38mm, 50mm, ???? I am thinking 50mm, as i will be able to get 2x 20mm dressed boards from them later on but i am open to better suggestions.
My concern is reguarding movement during storage. The timber will be stacked and stickered inside my shed so the weather shouldnt be a a problem, apart from ambient humidity and temp.
I pretty much set for machinery to resize ther timber when i am ready to use it i.e bandsaw, buzzer, thicknesser and saw table. etc
Any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciate as i have never done this before and i dont want to to stuff up some potentially nice timber.

Go for it! The nine years is a bit of a worry. Get your chainsaw and cut out a wedge to guage the depth of any cracking or rot. Also dock a firewood length off the worst looking end and split it to see how the wood looks. If it looks good and your transport and milling costs are reasonable your on a winner.

    cheers
