silky oak window frames

Hi All,

This is my first post so please be gentle haha.

I have been given these beautiful silky oak window frames from an old home which was demolished. My friend sanded his back but I really love the character that they have as is.

I am going to add glass and turn these into picture frames for our home.

I was wanting to seal them but I have no idea what the process or treatment type would be, I don't want any solvant which is going to eat away the old white paint.

They sure have had some exposure to the elements. The greying may simply be from prolonged sun exposure, but there may be some water damage also.

I would very carefulluy examine the framwes to see if there ar pockets of dry rot, fungus or soft punky wood. If any of this sort of damage is apparent I woul treat with any suitable proprietry product from, say, Bunnings.

Otherwise a couple of coats of Feast&Watson Fungishield will do the job you want.

They are indeed well weathered. Personally I would follow your friends example and bring them back to life but if you prefer to keep them as is and there is none of the problems with the timber as artme has suggested, probalby just a couple of coats of low sheen Polyurethane will do the trick. Welcome to the forum by the way.

thanks so much for your help, amazingly the ageing seems purely aesthetic, the integrity of the wood appears to be perfect!

I'll give it a couple coats of Polyurethane as suggested.
