Slash pine vs Radiata pine
Hello everyone,
1. Would appreciate some advice on the differences between these two kinds of pine for use in treated pine fencing in Sydney.
2. Is it correct to assume these are the only kinds of pine used in treated pine fencing in Sydney?
3. Is it true that slash pine is thicker and hence a stronger timber?
Thank you in advance

when you buy treated pine it will either be slash or radiata i dont think you can specify witch they are almost identical in anycase.

slash pine is a more brittle pine.can tend to split when nailed.has darker knots that radiata. Cyprus pine is also used for fencing. All should be treated h3 or higher. If you can,get 19mm thick.seems to be more stable in outside conditions.Less likely to twist and bow. Slash/radiata/cyprus all have their good and bad points.eg cyprus easy to paint a solid colour compared to the other two.Slash has overall less knots.radiata is easier to use and will last just as long. All based on a "run of mill grade"
hope this helps.

Thank you weisyboy/Carl
if they are almost identical, that means I can just concentrate on the cost factor then =)

Thanks for the insight, pineforyou.
Very helpful indeed...not easy to get info like that (I have scrolled thru many forums and google results)
You must have had much experience working with pine
There are a few companies out there advertising slash as a superior pine to radiata,
so that got me wondering. Thanks once again!
