Smelly timber
Does Blackbutt smell?
Found 6 pieces of it (4m long each) on the street on Friday night. It has a very strong odour like some sort of chemical. It stinks the whole garage and is too strong to be ignored.
Whats the story?
Thanks

Wongo,
I just finished a cabinet with blackbutt. Can't say it smells any more than anything else in my shed does. But then I don't have a very keen sense of smell. It's probably had something applied to or spilt on it."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

an old cabinetmaker may have pooed on it earlier. you never know with stuff you find on the street. good luck machining it, you might get s**t all over your saws (literally).

Funny you should mention that Wongo, I went for lay down Friday night (after a session on the thinners). And as i lay in my usual gutter, I thought, "bugger me!, someone nicked me roof". Lucky the weather was okay so I got some sleep, but it just didn't smell right.

Must've been a big night if you ended up in Sydney, Dave

Thanks boys
Hmmm, now I am feeling great.
I actually took a small sample to a timber yard and thy guy reckoned its nothing wrong. (that’s how learnt that it is Blackbutt). I don’t think it is anything dirty because it doesn’t smell that way.
I will be a bit more careful next time. There are a lot of good timbers people throw away and I will continue to re-use them (it is part of the fun. )
Thanks again.
