    Question Sol. Rosewood

    Hi Guys,

have some timber at home that i bought from somewhere years ago. it was labelled "Sol. Rosewood"

can't seem to find anything like that anywhere to indicate what the 'sol' bit might be short for. Is it a species variation of Rosewood, or maybe sol' was short for 'sold' as i think i got it at the Timber and Working with Wood Show and they had to mark pieces as sold. But it doesn't look like it.

gonna tell people it's rosewood, unless anyone can come up with a better suggestion.

    any ideas?

A wild guess, Costa Rica where Sol is used extensively, Gato de sol, Costa la sol.
Sol being a generic term for sun.

Solomom Islands sounds likely to me too. We use a lot of "new Guinea" Rosewood up here (PNG is closer than Brisbane). Worked on a boat that came from the Solomons a few years back. The bloke that owned it also owned hotels, hardware stores and sawmilling operations. They had a lot of really nice timber, all sourced from the islands. Said he could get me container loads of timber if I was interested and that their rosewood was identical to that from PNG.

    Thanks Guys,

After scouring the net looking for pictures of New Guinea Rosewood, I'm almost positive that that is what the timber is. At least now I can label items I have made from it, correctly.

    Thanks for your help.
