Default Where to source spotted gum

Just wondering where to find a small amount of spotted gum for handles. Do people just get something like a SG mattock handle from Bunnies to make a hammer handle or are there other easy sources?

If looking in the salvage/wreckers yard, how can you tell what piece of old 4x2 is likely to be spotted gum? I think I've read here that old ironbark isn't good as handle stuff. I've already got a stash of old ironbark and the local old framing timber is likely to be just that to.

It's a pity you don't live closer so I could give you a couple of pieces for nothing.

Try your local hardwood supplier. In Queensland the general run of mill hardwood may be spotted gum.

A few years back I did just that in Toowoomba and was surprised to find that their hardwood was a mixture of Ironbark and Spotted Gum (may be Lemon Scented Gum, but that's ok).

However the timber will be green. You can shape your handle first and then dry, but you need the time. So it depends on how much of a hurry you are in.

I get my spotted gum through work, I work at a Timber staircase factory.
Maybe check phone book in your area, when it comes to handles I prefer a reasonable quality timber.
we have guys clearing our scrap bins all the time.
knee high and shorter gets turfed. As we go through packs pretty quickly. And would have no room to move.
the last place I worked at I scored 5 by 5 red cedar post from a staircase that was removed and put in bin by installers. It had a few coats of shellac and paint but worth salvaging due to the size.

Dropped in yesterday, very nice people in the office but only pine in the 'firewood ' bin. Will try again another time.
